Appendicitis

Inflammation of the appendix caused by obstruction of the lumen by fecaliths or intestinal worms.

Risks for appendicitis include:

  • A low-fiber diet.
  • Age > 45.

Sequelae of appendicitis include:
1. Fluid accumulation builds pressure within appendix.
2. Decreased blood flow leads to ischemia.
3. Necrosis of appendix creates perforation.
4. Bacteria escape into peritoneum -> peritonitis.

Signs and symptoms of appendicitis include:

  • Generalized periumbilical pain.
  • Piercing abdominal RLQ pain due to serosa distension.
  • Fever.
